Sani Pass

Why not incorporate a bit of adventure into your holiday?

The Famous Sani Pass is a spectacular mountain road that is a well-known (but awesome) entry point into Lesotho from South Africa and can be the ideal adventure holiday whilst incorporating a bit of luxury at Sani Valley Lodge. Please do not forget your passports, visas are normally not required, but please check first so as to avoid dissapointment. This is the gateway to the "Roof of Africa".

A scenic 4 x 4 route links the Drakensberg Mountains with Lesotho.

The Sani Pass is the only border post between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho. A 4 x 4 vehicle with low range is definitely necessary for this road, the last 8km can take up to 2hrs to traverse and a skilled driver is recommended. We have tour guides that we can recommend, feel free to contact us at info@sanivalley.co.za for more information. The views can be breath taking, if it is a clear day one can see for sometimes up to 50km, if it is a cloudy day one often drives through the cloud and once above it the view down from above is serene.

Never underestimate the weather though, winter temperatures can get to as low as -20 degrees at the top, and snow is very common, you can have four seasons in one day when you are in the mountains so be prepared, even in summer. We have had snow here every month of the year!

Have lunch at Sani Top Chalet (the highest pub in Africa) at the top of the Sani pass or just a drink to calm the nerves!

The Sani Pass was once a rough mule trail descending the Eastern Highlands of old Basutoland into Natal. Tough drovers brought wool and mohair down the
Pass on donkeys and mules to be exchanged for blankets, clothing, maize meal and the essentials for life in a remote, impoverished country. And a young man had a dream of operating a motor vehicle service up this fantastic Pass, using the 4-wheel drive vehicles he had seen on service in World War II. His name was David Alexander and he founded his Company in 1955. It has operated on the Sani Pass ever since.

Sani Valley Lodge is the ideal accommodation for the adventurous type, but home comforts are still important. After a long 4 x 4 excursion coming back to a Jacuzzi and a full body massage is the best way to relax and plan your next adventure, maybe a quad bike ride, a game viewing ride on horseback or a 5 hour hike to visit the Bushman Paintings!
